Pulse and continuous flow explained
Oxygen flow is delivered in two ways. It can be free-flowing (continuous flow) or administered only when you inhale (pulse flow).
The smaller, battery-powered portable concentrators typically administer oxygen using pulse flow delivery. It is based on the logic that if you are using continuous flow and exhale, oxygen isn’t being taken in and is therefore wasted. Instead, pulse flow delivery works in tandem with your breathing - so every time you take a breath in through a nasal cannula, the oxygen concentrator is triggered to deliver a short burst of oxygen. Pulse flow devices only produce the amount of oxygen that it really needs, which in turn allows machines to be made small and lightweight. Pulse flow delivery comes in the form of settings. The higher the setting, the more milliliters of oxygen there is available over a course of one minute.
